Manchester United may yet lose Jesse Lingard to Newcastle before the end of the January transfer window, but the Old Trafford outfit have had to knock back a puny bid from the St James’ Park club for the England winger already.

With the hours ticking down before the transfer deadline, there promises to be a scramble between Newcastle and West Ham to secure the services of the 29-year-old.

Lingard is out of contract at Old Trafford at the end of the season, with this the last opportunity for Man Utd to sell their youth product if they have no intention of extending his contract.

The relationship between the player and the club at the moment is taught. Lingard was promised more gametime at the start of the season than he has been afforded, while he has reportedly been frustrated by the club’s refusal thus far to loan him out.

Newcastle, meanwhile, are continuing to plug away at Man Utd’s resolve, hoping that they may crack in the final hours of the January window.

Earlier this week, it was reported that the move was dead because of the Red Devils’ demands. The Telegraph stated that Man Utd were wanting a total of £16.5 million for a six-month loan deal for Lingard. This comprised of £4.5m in wages, with a further £12m payable as a bonus if Newcastle were to secure Premier League survival.

Now it is reported by the Daily Mail that Newcastle have returned with a far more modest offer for Lingard. They are offering a £3m loan fee plus a possible survival bonus of up to £4m.

With hours of the window remaining, it appears to be a contest to see who might blink first.

West Ham, meanwhile, remain outsiders. Not only do they not have the financial pulling power of Newcastle, but they are also directly competing with Man Utd for a European spot.

Meanwhile, The Athletic believe that Lingard will stay at Man Utd and be allowed to depart for free at the end of his contract – something that seems likely at this late stage.
