Everton have announced that manager Rafael Benitez has been sacked, and will no longer be in charge of the club.

It follows a poor run of results that has seen the Goodison Park outfit fall into a relegation battle.

A short statement on Everton's official website on Sunday read: "Everton Football Club can confirm the departure of Rafael Benitez as First Team manager.

"Benitez, who joined Everton in June 2021, has left the Club with immediate effect.

"An update on a permanent replacement will be made in due course."

The Toffees have won just one Premier League game since September, and despite a bright start for Benitez, the club has taken the decision to look elsewhere.

Benitez's replacement isn't yet known, although the club are looking for possible options.

The 2-1 league loss to struggling Norwich proved to be the tipping point for the Everton hierarchy, with that performance and result not deemed good enough.

Benitez arrived at the club in the summer, following a stint at Dalian Professional in China, with a glowing reputation in the league.

His first spell in England saw him crowned European champions with Liverpool, he won the Europa League with his second club in the country in Chelsea, while he pushed Newcastle up from the relegation zone to a midtable finish.

So, Benitez is well versed in the Premier League, but following nine losses, two draws, and just one win since the start of October, the decision has been made to sack him.

Everton have been scouting around for a replacement, although a decision is yet to be made.

Benitez guided Everton to four wins in their first five league games, and a promising season looked on offer. However, that form soon slipped away, and this announcement has been expected for a short while.
