Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Wolves on Thursday was a win of vital importance to the Emirates club as they chase a place in the top four of the Premier League.

The Gunners moved to within a point of West Ham in the standings thanks to the victory, which was secured thanks to a single first-half goal from Gabriel. They then had to tough out the closing stages of the match as Gabriel Martinelli was controversially sent off.

After the match, Mikel Arteta’s side celebrated wildly, which was a fact not lost on Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves.

“We saw the way they celebrated the win and that shows the level we are,” he said afterwards.

“I didn’t see Arsenal celebrating like this in the past 10 years – it was like they won the league.”

Neves hints he has no interest in Arsenal

Neves has been linked with a transfer to Arsenal for several weeks, with the Gunners seeking solutions to their lack of depth in the heart of the midfield. The Portuguese star’s comments, though, highlight the fact that he believes that Gunners are not presently a far better proposition than Wolves.

He underlined that Arsenal see Wolves as being on a par with them, which suggests that he would not necessarily be rushing the Emirates Stadium from Wolverhampton if a bid were to come. And the very fact that the Gunners celebrated so vociferously highlights that they are no longer one of England’s most competitive clubs.

This is a situation that Arsenal have it within themselves to change in the next three months – and if they want to sign Neves, they may well have to do so.

In order to elevate themselves to another level, Arsenal have to nail down that top-four finish, which will highlight to Neves and their other transfer targets that they are once again a genuine force to be reckoned with.
