Arsenal will KEEP paying Aubameyang despite move to Barcelona
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s move from Arsenal to Barcelona was one of the biggest transfers of the January transfer window.
Fans of the London club weren’t entirely happy to see their star striker move on, but many would have understood the need to get a disgruntled or out-of-form player off the club’s wage bill.
However, according to new reports in England, Arsenal are still paying Aubameyang a substantial amount of money for the remainder of the season. Even though he now no longer plays for the club.
A new report by the Times has suggested that Arsenal will have to fork out no less than £7 million (€8.3 million) to Aubameyang as part of the agreement that allowed him to move to Barcelona.
And when asked about the subject on Sky Sports News, the Athletic’s David Ornstein all but confirmed it.
"There were some reports Aubameyang had gone free of charge to Barcelona, I understand that's not the case,” said Ornstein.
"There was a report in The Times saying £7m was paid for him to go. I don't know the exact figure, but I know Arsenal are paying him an instalment until the summer, very much as they did with Ozil.
"In this case, they're splitting the wage with Aubameyang, and he's taking a personal hit."
A repeat of Ozil?
Fans of the London club will undoubtedly be rolling their eyes at the news, as it certainly suggests that Arsenal have once again fallen into a similar trap as the one Mesut Ozil set for them last year.
The Germany international left under similar circumstances last January to join Fenerbahce, but not before Arsenal agreed to pay part of his wages for the remainder of the season.
Whether such drastic measures will end up being the right move remains to be seen, but Arsenal seem to be sending a lot of money on players they don’t want.
