Cristiano Ronaldo has been told that it is “obvious” he has to score more goals by Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

Ronaldo is presently in his worst scoring slump for 12 years, having gone five league matches without finding the net for Man Utd.

In addition to this run, Ronaldo also missed a penalty against Middlesbrough in the FA Cup as the Red Devils surprisingly crashed out of the competition, leaving their only hope of silverware as the Champions League.

Following that defeat, Rangnick would have expected a positive response in a Premier League clash against Burnley, but the match finished 1-1.

Ronaldo was left on the bench from the outset of that game, which was a move that only served to fuel rumours that he is not happy under Rangnick at Old Trafford.

The German’s words during Friday’s press conference will not have helped that five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s mood any, although he certainly was not the only player the former Schalke boss pointed the finger at.

“Ronaldo should score more goals, it is obvious” Ranginick said. “We have created a lot of chances but have not scored enough but it is not only about Cristiano.”

Ronaldo’s uncertain Man Utd future

Although the interim boss was at pains to stress that the whole attack needs to raise their game, there is no doubt that the majority of the scoring burden now falls on the veteran Portuguese.

Rangnick appears to have begrudgingly accepted Ronaldo as an integral part of his first team, but there is greater doubt over whether he will continue to do so next season.

As a consequence, reports on Friday suggest that the attacker wants showdown talks with the club, although Ronaldo’s future options will be severely restricted by the financial crisis currently affecting any of football’s biggest sides.

Nevertheless, as the finger is pointed at Cristiano for Manchester United’s failings, it is a situation he is unlikely to accept.
