Harry Maguire’s Manchester United season has been little short of a total catastrophe and certainly not a campaign befitting of a player who arrived for €87 million (£80m) in the summer of 2019/20.

Between a loss in his form and controversy over the captaincy, Maguire has often been in the headlines for the wrong reasons.

REVEALED: The world's most valuable footballers

Ahead of a vital Premier League clash against Arsenal on Saturday, he is set to be left out of the Man Utd starting XI by interim manager Ralf Rangnick after a bomb threat led to a police search of the player's house.

Speaking on the eve of the game, Rangnick said: "This is another bad sign of the crazy world we’re living in and obviously, I feel very sorry for Harry that he had that terrible experience. He knows that we are all behind him, the club is behind him, everybody, the players, his team-mates."

Maguire, meanwhile, is set to be benched on compassionate grounds, according to The Athletic.

After a stellar showing with England at Euro 2020, this was not how his season was scripted to go.

But how has all this impact on his transfer value? Will Man Utd be able to offload him without taking too great a hit on their investment from three years ago?

Maguire's transfer value

The brutal truth is that Man Utd stand to make a sizeable loss on Maguire. FootballTransfers’ rates that England centre-back as being worth around €42m – around half the figure that he was bought for.

This value is calculated by taking into account hundreds of in-game data points as well as external factors, such as length remaining of contract and age.

Man Utd’s mistake, though, has come in the exorbitant sum that they spent on Maguire in the first place back in 2019. He was valued at that point by our algorithm to be worth in the region of €25m, yet they spent more than three times that to capture the former Hull City man.

Indeed, Maguire’s valuation has actually increased since he joined the Old Trafford side.

His peak came in January 2021, but he has declined since then, with an acceleration of that fall taking place since November. Over the last month, his value has dropped an estimated €2m.

It is a worrying sign for Man Utd that their lynchpin defender has dropped so dramatically and explains why the club are being linked with other options.

Maguire’s case stands in sharp comparison to central defensive colleague Raphael Varane, who was signed for €40m in the summer from Real Madrid but presently has an estimated value of €59m.
