In the summer of 2021, Liverpool were relatively frugal in the transfer window by today's standards as their only meaningful acquisition was Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig for €40 million.

The following January, the brought forward plans to sign Luis Diaz, and brought the Colombian to Anfield for €45 million.

To fund some of that expenditure, they let a number of players leave both permanently and on loan.

So, let's see how Liverpool's departed players have performed this season?

Harry Wilson - €14m to Fulham

Harry Wilson has unfortunately been at Liverpool at a time when it has been extremely tough for a young player to break into the forward line due to the presence of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

Add Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz to the mix now, and Wilson clearly made the correct decision in leaving the club on a permanent basis for Fulham in the summer.

Wilson has been key in Fulham's attempts to earn promotion from the Championship, scoring 10 goals and recording 13 assists in 32 starts in the second tier.

Taiwo Awoniyi - €6.5m to Union Berlin

Taiwo Awoniyi spent last season on loan at Berlin and completed a permanent move to the Bundesliga side in 2021.

It has proved a brilliant move for the 24-year-old as he has banged in goals on a regular basis in Germany.

Indeed, he has been tipped to make a return to the Premier League, with West Ham, Southampton and Everton interested in a summer deal.

Any move would earn Liverpool a bonus sell-on clause.

Xherdan Shaqiri - €6m to Lyon

Xherdan Shaqiri was largely a squad player at Liverpool during his time at the club, even if he did enjoy Champions League and Premier League success.

He left for Lyon in the summer but injury and form issues meant that he failed to make an impact in France.

Lyon were only to happy to let Shaqiri go to Major League Soccer six months after arriving, and actually got a slight profit on the Switzerland international.

Marko Grujic - LOAN and permanent to Porto

Marko Grujic joined Liverpool in 2016 but would spend the next few years on loan at various clubs including Cardiff, Hertha and eventually Porto.

He has enjoyed the best football of his career in Portugal and Porto have already exercised a clause to make the deal permanent.

Georginio Wijnaldum - FREE to PSG

Previously a key player at Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp, even in an unsuccessful 2020/21 season, Georginio Wijnaldum's career has completely stagnated at PSG.

The Dutchman turned down Barcelona for the riches of PSG, but the move hasn't worked out and he has started just 20 games, certainly not the tally of an automatic starter.

The French giants have been linked with a number of central midfielders, while Wijnaldum himself is reportedly a target of former club, Newcastle.
