Manchester United are set to name Ajax head coach Erik ten Hag as their new manager, and the first job of the Dutchman will be offloading the club’s incredible amount of deadwood.

Although the Old Trafford side were tipped as possible Premier League winners by some critics coming into this campaign thanks to what, on paper, was a fine transfer window last summer, they are scrambling to reach the Champions League spots.

Indeed, following Tuesday’s 4-0 humiliation by Liverpool, the Red Devils face what is effectively a cup final against Arsenal on Saturday. Lose that fixture and they will be six points off the pace of the Gunners, effectively ending any hopes they had of a return to Europe’s top table.

While it has been reported that such an eventuality would see Ten Hag’s transfer budget slashed – perhaps as low as £20 million – The Mirror reports that the new manager can look forward to a spending pot of around £200m for the forthcoming transfer window.

As many as 12 players could leave over the course of the summer to make room in the squad new arrivals.

Which players will leave Man Utd in the summer?

There are six Manchester United stars who are out of contract in the summer and all, rather predictably, are set to be released.

Among the most prominent of these players are Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani and Juan Mata. Jesse Lingard will finally depart after pushing for a transfer last summer, while veterans Nemanja Matic and Lee Grant will also go.

Who will Man Utd sell in the transfer window?

While the first half dozen players will be easy to offload, Man Utd will have to work harder to offload the other six men they want off their books.

The defence is set to be the area where the overhaul is greatest here. Full-backs Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Alex Telles will be put up for sale, while in the middle of the rearguard, Eric Bailly and Phil Jones are for the chop.

Elsewhere, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford will be on their way, suggesting significant plans in attack.
