Manchester United have confirmed the appointment of Erik ten Hag as their new manager.

The 52-year-old coach had been with Ajax since 2017. He helped to establish the Amsterdam club as the foremost power in the Netherlands once again and even played a major role as they became a force in the Champions League once more.

Ten Hag’s appointment at Man Utd comes as little surprise as he was linked with the club for month and, along with Paris Saint-Germain head coach, was one of the frontrunners for the permanent post since it was made vacant by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the autumn.

There was a delay over the official announcement of his appointment at Old Trafford due to Ajax’s presence in the KNVB Beker, which took place on April 17 against PSV.

Ten Hag will join Man Utd in the summer but still has work to complete at Ajax, where his side hold a four-point lead over PSV in the Eredivisie stands. Should they close out the title it would mark a third successive championship for Ajax, excluding the 2019/20 season, which was abandoned because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Prior to Ten Hag’s arrival at Ajax, they had gone three seasons without winning the trophy.

Why have Man Utd appointed Ten Hag?

Man Utd have looked to the Ajax boss because they need a change of culture after years of underperforming.

It is expected that he will go to Old Trafford with a fresh eye and a fresh approach, which will not pander to the egos in the dressing room. There has even been speculation that Cristiano Ronaldo will be among those to be pushed out of the club.

The impact that he can have at the club, however, may depend on what the club can do in the transfer market this summer.
