Ralf Rangnick has been appointed as the new head coach of the Austria national team.

Following the dismal tenure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Rangnick was appointed caretaker manager of Manchester United in December.

The German was brought in to steady the ship at Old Trafford until the end of the season, after which he was scheduled to undertake a consultancy role behind the scenes, focusing on areas like youth development and coaching.

At the beginning of April, the Austrian Football Association denied reports that a meeting had taken place with Rangnick about becoming the nation's new head coach.

Reports emerged that the head of the Austrian FA, Peter Schottel, flew to Manchester to speak with Rangnick.

Via its official Twitter page, the FA has denied this. Tweeting:

"Clarification: There was no meeting between ÖFB sports director Peter Schöttel and Ralf Rangnick, coach of @ManUtd."

However, further developments have taken place and an official announcement of Rangnick's appointment is expected this weekend.

Will Rangnick continue at Man Utd?

Man Utd have already announced that Erik ten Hag will be the manager of the Red Devils ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

The Dutchman beat off competition from a number of candidates to land the job, including reportedly Mauricio Pochettino and Luis Enrique.

Even though Rangnick will now be the head coach of Austria, the plan is for him to move forward in a dual role, acting in his consultancy position for Man Utd at the same time.

Sky Sports Germany reported this on Friday.

Unfortunately for Rangnick and Man Utd, things haven't gone to plan since his appointment and they are now out of the race for the Champions League and won't win any silverware this season.

They are suffering from their worst trophy drought in 40 years.

The German does have a better points-per-game ratio than his predecessor, Solskjaer, and has already been credited with modernising parts of the club behind the scenes.

The squad at Old Trafford will be given a complete overhaul this summer, as after a recent 4-0 loss against Liverpool, Rangnick admitted that no less than TEN players could be signed in the next window.
