Arteta’s new Arsenal contract: What is his record with the Gunners?
Arsenal have announced that manager Mikel Arteta has signed a with the club.
The Spaniard has been on something of a roller coaster ride at the Emirates since he took charge in December 2019, and at the beginning of the 2021/22 campaign there was a strong suggestion he could be fired as the Gunners struggled to get going.
Arsenal’s patience, though, seems to have been rewarded. Arteta has the club back challenging for the Champions League places and there is a broad sense of optimism that once again the north Londoners are going places.
Indeed, Arteta’s renewal marks the first real stability the club has had since the reign of Arsene Wenger ended in 2018.
He has achieved this by purging the squad of influences who have been deemed to be unhealthy, no matter their status in the squad. For example, Mesut Ozil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have both been moved on following strong decisions from the manager. This is arguably Areta’s greatest legacy at the club to date.
What is Arteta’s record as Arsenal manager?
Arteta took over Arsenal at a difficult time and turning the club around has been a prolonged project. ‘Trust the process’ has been the mantra around the Emirates in recent years, and this faith appears to be paying off.
With a 54.33% win rate, Arteta has the third-best record of any permanent Arsenal manager in history. Curiously, this still trails the 55.13% that predecessor Unai Emery boasted, and of course it is Wenger who is well out in front in this regard on 57.25%, achieved over nearly 22 years.
In each of the two completed Premier League seasons that Arteta has overseen, Arsenal have finished in eighth. In 2019/20, they earned 56 points and in the following year, his first complete campaign in charge, they got 61.
They are already well past that total in 2021/22 with four games remaining.
What trophies has Arteta won at Arsenal?
Arteta has continued Arsenal’s proud FA Cup tradition since moving to the Emirates, leading the Gunners to the 2019/20 edition of the trophy. They famously beat Chelsea 2-1 in the final, with a double from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang cancelling out an early opener from Christian Pulisic in a match played behind closed doors because of the Covid pandemic.
Arsenal subsequently lifted the 2020 Community Shield by beating Liverpool on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
