Man Utd have made the signing of a top midfielder a priority this summer and hope to reunite De Jong with his former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag, who has taken over at Old Trafford.

Reports in Spain in recent weeks have claimed that Barcelona are happy to sell the Dutchman, who has failed to fulfil his potential at Camp Nou since arriving in 2019 from Ajax.

A fee of around €70 million has been suggested.

However, De Jong has denied there is anything serious yet in Man Utd’s interest.

What did De Jong say?

“Not that I know of in any case,” he said. “Either that or they must not have told me, but I don’t think so,” De Jong told reporters on international duty with the Netherlands.

“What I’m saying is there is absolutely no agreement or anything official. At the moment there is no question at all.

“[But] I don’t respond to rumours anymore. I feel good at Barcelona. I prefer to stay with Barca.

“I have said it many times: Barcelona is my dream club.

“It has been from a young age. I have never regretted my decision [to come here] despite the fact that I had hoped for more in terms of prizes than I’ve achieved so far. But I have never regretted my choice.”

De Jong has made 140 appearances for Barcelona, scoring 13 goals.

He has won only one trophy at Camp Nou, the 2021 Copa del Rey.

The 25-year-old was expected to become one of the best midfielders in the world at Barcelona but is now considered expendable.

With the club reportedly needing to generate €500m by June 30 in order to balance the books, De Jong represents one of the few players who can recoup a big chunk of that in a transfer fee.
