Kylian Mbappe’s decision to reject Real Madrid and stay with PSG might be celebrated among fans of the Parisian club, but equally it is great news for Liverpool, too.

Mbappe is set to sign a three-year contract with the Parc des Princes club, which will tie him to his hometown team until 2025, by which point he will be 26.

It is a decision that has rocked Real Madrid, but the loss of the Spanish club is a gain for Liverpool on two fronts.

Firstly, and most immediately, it increases their chances of keeping Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah at the club.

PSG were closely linked with both players, whose deals are up in 2023. With a major contender for their signatures now content with their attacking trio, it means that the Reds have greater scope for negotiating reasonable deals for their existing players.

Secondly, the timing of the contract works out nicely for Liverpool. Indeed, they can now start to time their next cycle upon potentially signing the PSG star.

Although Mbappe has indicated his wish to remain at his hometown club in the medium-term, it would be surprising if he did not want to try his luck elsewhere at some point in the future. He has already expressed his admiration for Liverpool and manager Jurgen Klopp, who has committed himself to the Anfield side for the long term.

Real Madrid may not be quite so eager to sign Mbappe after the drama of the past year, while the trajectory of the Premier League is one that is set to see it get increasingly powerful. The Spanish top flight, meanwhile, is heading in the opposite direction and is likely to be without an iconic world star next season with which to sell itself with.

Liverpool, then, look well placed to become Mbappe’s next club in the long term.
