Manchester United have received good news and bad news over their transfer chase for Wolves star Ruben Neves, but the prospects of the Red Devils signing the midfielder look slimmer than before.

The Portugal international is one of a number of players that Man Utd have been linked with this summer as they seek to upgrade their options in midfield.

Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic will both leave the club as their contracts expire, while the combination of Fred and Scott McTominay is widely seen as uninspiring. Meanwhile, Donny van de Beek has struggled to impress since moving to the club from Ajax, although he could get his chance under former boss Erik ten Hag.

There is mixed news over their prospects of landing the 25-year-old.

First, the good news. As reported by the Daily Mail, Neves wishes to remain in the Premier League should he leave Wolves this summer.

His options may have been limited in any case because of the financial crisis that has stung European football, but at least this is positive for Man Utd.

What is Wolves’ asking price for Ruben Neves?

The second update regards the price Wolves are asking for the midfield, which is not so positive from the Red Devils’ perspective.

Neves has had an €82 million (£70m) price tag put around him, which is around twice FootballTransfers’ €45m valuation of the player.

United showed in their transfer business last summer and unwillingness to meet high transfer demands of selling clubs, and though there has been a changing of the guard in that respect at Old Trafford, the principles will surely remain the same, particularly when there are alternatives available at a more reasonable price.

Monaco’s Aurelien Tchouameni and Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong stand out as two players who could come in at a fraction of the cost that Wolves are seeking for a player who only has a couple of years left to run on his deal.

Certainly, Man Utd should at least consider other options in order to force Wolves into a rethink of the valuation they have placed on Neves. He simply isn’t worth it as it stands.
