Arsenal’s summer transfer spending spree has stepped up a notch with the £45 million arrival of Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City.

Matt Turner has already joined from the New England Revolution, Marquinhos has flown in from Sao Paulo and a deal for Fabio Vieira has also been completed.

A striker, though, has been high on Mikel Arteta’s shortlist for months and the manager has taken advantage of Man City signing Erling Haaland to pounce on Gabriel Jesus.

Arsenal’s lack of prolific scorer last season severely hampered their push for a Champions League place, with leading league marksman Bukayo Saka getting only 11 goals. Centre forwards Eddie Nketiah and Alexandre Lacazette contributed only nine in total, albeit the former was only given a handful of minutes.

Lacazette has since been released at the end of his contract as he returned to Lyon, leaving a void in the squad that Gabriel Jesus is set to fill.

Gunners fans hope that Gabriel Jesus can prove the answer to their goalscoring problems – but how does his record look?

The 25-year-old arrived at Manchester City in January 2017 from Palmeiras, where he has netted 28 goals in 83 games in Brazil. He started explosively in the Premier League, scoring seven times in his first 10 matches but has struggled to show such prolific form since then.

Indeed, his scoring record in the Premier League runs to 58 goals in 159 appearances, though it is worth stressing the many of these game off the bench. The 2019/20 season proved to be his most prolific as he scored 14 times for the Cityzens as they finished as runners-up to Liverpool in the title race.

His record of around one goal in every three games is improved in cup competitions. He has particularly excelled in Europe, where he has struck 20 goals in 38 games.

One point of concern for Gunners fans seeking a prolific striker is Gabriel Jesus’ xG per goal scored. This should hover around the 1 mark, but his figure has typically been around 1.1, indicating that he scores 10% fewer goals than he might be expected to.

This is not catastrophic. Given the volume of chances Arsenal create, though, Arteta will be hopeful that Gabriel Jesus’ inefficiency doesn’t matter simply because he will get into so many good scoring positions.
