Cristiano Ronaldo has hit out at “lies” over his Manchester United future in a bizarre Instagram post.

The Portugal international continues to be heavily linked with a transfer away from the Old Trafford club, with reports indicating that he has asked to leave the Red Devils in order to play for a more competitive side.

Ronaldo, who began pre-season training with the club on Wednesday after missing their tour of Thailand and Australia, has rejected the claim that he is pushing to leave Man Utd.

He posted a reply to a fan account that claimed: “Jorge Mendes told Manchester United that Cristiano Ronaldo is adamant about leaving, but Mendes left negotiations less than positive that Ronaldo would get his move. Sir Alex Ferguson has intervened. United insist Ronaldo is not for sale.”

In Portuguese, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner stated: “It’s impossible not to talk about me for one day.

“Otherwise, the press makes no money. You know that if you don’t lie, you can’t get people’s attention. Keep going and one day you will get some news right.”

Ronaldo goes public on transfer rumours for the first time

This is the first time that Ronaldo has directly passed comment on his future, having previously resorted to posting images of himself training on Instagram. One of these was posted at half-time of his side’s 2-2 draw with Aston Villa, with Man Utd fans drawing optimism from the fact that he was wearing the club shorts during his workout.

The player’s comments are unlikely to do much to dampen speculation that he wishes to leave Man Utd, for whom he may make his first appearance at the weekend in a friendly against Rayo Vallecano.

Ronaldo was widely considered to be Manchester United’s driving force last season, scoring 24 times in a frustrating campaign in which the Old Trafford side finished sixth in the Premier League.
