Manchester United are hoping to get back into the Champions League next season, and Erik ten Hag could benefit greatly from it.

The Red Devils finished sixth last season, only narrowly qualifying for the Europa League, just ahead of West Ham United, and will want to make amends in 2021-22.

They’ve already made some changes to the squad, letting go off certain players and bringing in Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martinez and Christian Eriksen.

Returning to the Champions League is the primary aim, and Ten Hag could pocket a big bonus if he manages to achieve that in his first season.

How much will Ten Hag receive from Champions League return?

The former Ajax boss will receive £3 million if he manages to lead United back into Europe’s premier club cup competition in his first season.

United can make it back through either their league position, by finishing in the top four, or they could do so by winning the Europa League, where they will face stiff competition.

Qualifying for the Champions League is a priority for Manchester United every season, as it plays a part on their finances, as the club make huge losses when they don’t get there.

The club have already made it clear they want to avoid a repeat of last season, and have been giving Ten Hag all he wants in terms of transfer targets, as evident by their chase of Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong.

The team made a positive start in pre-season as well, showing encouraging signs in victories over Liverpool, Melbourne Victory and Crystal Palace.

They face further pre-season tests against Atletico Madrid and Rayo Vallecano, before kicking off the season at home to Brighton on 7 August.

United also haven’t won a trophy since 2017 – the Europa League in 2017 under Jose Mourinho being their last – and will want to change that in the 2022/23 campaign.
