Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez have not joined the Man Utd squad – here’s why
Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez may be Manchester United’s latest signings, but they have yet to join up with the squad.
The arrivals of both players have been confirmed in recent days, with Eriksen joining the club on Friday and the formalities still being completed on a deal for the Ajax defender, despite an agreement being made between both clubs and the player.
It will be around a week, however, before they hook up with their new team-mates.
Manager Erik ten Hag has explained why they will not take part in the forthcoming friendlies against Crystal Palace and Aston Villa.
“Unfortunately we cannot have them here in the tour, because at the moment they arrive here we will fly back. So that doesn’t make sense,” the former Ajax boss explained to the club’s official website.
“We cannot wait to involve them in our squad and the fans also cannot wait.
“Every year it’s the same as a trainer: you want your squad complete as soon as possible. But also fans look forward to new players and what is the squad and what they can contribute and they want an identification.”
Ten Hag on Martinez
Ten Hag, meanwhile, says that he believes Martinez is a player the fans will love.
“He’s a warrior and I think the fans will admire him. He has an attitude, fighting spirit,” the Dutchman said on Martinez.
“He brings aggressiveness in the game, in a good way. I think we need that.
“But also, he’s also skilful and he can deal with the ball and he’s left-footed.
“I think the Premier League is high intensity, lots of challenges. We need such players with fighting spirit.”
Martinez, meanwhile, should have already endeared himself to the Man Utd support by stating that he has no aspirations to be like Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk.
