Maguire may be the world’s most expensive defender, but he was also the target for intense criticism last season for a string of disappointing performances.

Many felt that he was unworthy of being the club captain as United slumped to sixth in the Premier League table and experienced their worst campaign in terms of points in the history of the competition.

The arrival of Ten Hag was supposed to signal the end of the previous era, but in backing Maguire as captain, there is already a sense of déjà vu creeping over Man Utd fans before the first ball has even been kicked in the club’s first pre-season friendly against Liverpool on Tuesday.

Indeed, many supporters are angry that the feel-good factor that the Dutchman brought when his arrival was announced has been eradicated within weeks. The club have failed to land major transfer targets, there is ongoing uncertainty over the future of Cristiano Ronaldo and now Maguire has been made captain.

That has been reflected in the response of many fans on social media to what they perceive to be the latest setback in the early weeks of Ten Hag’s time in charge of the club.

However, there are a group of Man Utd fans, led by Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville, still backing the defender.

Ten Hag will quickly have learned the difficulties in being Manchester United boss, then.
