Darwin Nunez endured a rough start to his Liverpool career in Tuesday's resounding friendly defeat to Manchester United.

The Uruguayan became the Reds' most expensive signing in history this summer when he joined from Benfica in a deal that could end up topping €100 million once bonuses and add-ons are taken into consideration.

Nunez was then given an early chance to show Liverpool fans what he could do in their opening pre-season friendly against arch-rivals United, played in Thai capital Bangkok.

But he and the Merseysiders will want to put the game behind them as soon as possible after a torrid 90 minutes.

Jadon Sancho, Fred, Anthony Martial and Facundo Pellistri, Nunez's compatriot and Uruguay national team colleague, all got on the scoresheet as United won 4-0, a result that will surely leave new boss Erik ten Hag extremely content as he saw his charges go through their paces for the first time in pre-season.

A game for forget for Nunez

Nunez, meanwhile, spurned a simple chance to pull one back for Liverpool in the dying minutes when he spooned a rebound over the bar with the goal gaping.

It would be foolish to judge the 23-year-old on just one game, particularly a pre-season friendly after two months of inactivity and with the added challenge of fitting in to a new club, but it was a great start for the forward.

Liverpool will hope Nunez's slip will not be repeated when it really counts - though United fans were certainly pleased to see him fluff his lines.
