Chelsea have been quoted £60m/€70m by Everton for Anthony Gordon. Conor Gallagher could be used as a potential makeweight - something the Blues should push through.

If you had claimed last season that Gallagher would be used as a player to drive Gordon's fee down, you might have been laughed at.

Gallagher spent the season on loan at Crystal Palace, scored eight Premier League goals from midfield, and forced his way into Gareth Southgate's England squad. Gordon, meanwhile, mustered four goals in 35 games - 25 of them starts - as Everton finished 16th, just four points clear of relegation.

But things move fast in football, and Gordon has been identified by Thomas Tuchel as a player who could help Chelsea as they look to get back to providing serious competition for the Premier League title. Everton are aware of their interest, and have put a premium on the England under-21 winger's asking price.

"There absolutely has to come a time where we have to understand what the squad is going to be and especially a player of the level of Anthony, I have to know he is going be here," said Frank Lampard ahead of Everton's 1-0 win at Brentford.

Lampard: 'impossible question'

"It is very difficult, I got asked last week, will he be here at the end of the window, and it is an impossible question to answer, really," he then conceded.

The Toffees clearly don't want to lose Gordon, but Gallagher has been touted as a player who could move in part-exchange - as has Armando Broja, with Everton crying out for a fit and firing striker.

But while Gordon was latching onto Conor Coady's through-ball to score what was ultimately Everton's winner on Saturday, Gallagher was getting sent off for Chelsea at home to Leicester. Tuchel's side escaped with a 2-1 win, but Gallagher's stock is falling.

He has been given a chance in Chelsea's midfield with N'Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic injured, but he has so far looked lost in there, giving Chelsea's reported interest in Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong further credence.

Gallagher might only go to Goodison Park on loan, but if Chelsea can persuade him and Everton to make his half of the Gordon deal permanent, it would be prudent.
