The Blues are paying £70m/€81m up front for the France under-21 centre-back, with add-ons potentially taking that to £80m/€93m - which would make it a world record fee for a defender, surpassing the amounts paid for Virgil van Dijk and Harry Maguire.

Chelsea have been in the market for central defenders all summer after losing Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen on free transfers to Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively.

Kalidou Koulibaly has already been acquired from Napoli for €38 million, and although the Blues beat Manchester City to the €72m signing of Marc Cucurella from Brighton, the Spaniard prefers playing on the left flank.

Fofana completes Chelsea's backline, and he can't wait to get going, telling their official website that: "The two last days have been really big days for me and I'm very happy.

"I trained this morning with the team and it's a dream for me. I'm very excited to start playing games for the fans and the club.

"I'm here to win trophies - the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, everything. I came here to win and the club is built to win trophies so I'm here to continue that."

Fans share his excitement, with one even getting biblical…
