Chelsea and Manchester United have seen their hopes of signing Leicester City forward Jamie Vardy this summer majorly dented.

The Englishman, who is now 35 years old, has been linked with a move away from the King Power Stadium this summer, and both Chelsea and Man Utd have expressed an interest in signing him according to reports.

Leicester have already lost club legend Kasper Schmeichel this window, who has joined Nice, while Youri Tielemans, Wesley Fofana and James Maddison have all been touted for moves away. The latter looks likely to stay, while Brendan Rodgers has repeatedly stressed that Fofana will not be leaving this summer, although Chelsea's interest in signing the Frenchman is strong.

As for Vardy, Chelsea and Man Utd have both explored the possibility of signing him to bolster their attacking options, with that area of the pitch deemed a weakness for both clubs. For Chelsea, they have sold Timo Werner back to RB Leipzig, while Romelu Lukaku has re-joined Inter Milan on loan, leaving them slightly short in attack, despite the arrival of Raheem Sterling from Manchester City, and the return of Armando Broja from his loan spell at Southampton.

On the other hand, Man Utd are in desperate need of attacking reinforcements after Edinson Cavani's exit, Anthony Martial's injury and Cristiano Ronaldo's desire to leave.

The Portuguese star is looking likely to stay due to a lack of interest, but there is still a gaping hole in Man Utd'd attack. As a result, they've targeted Stuttgart's Sasa Kalajdzic and PSV's Cody Gakpo, among other, but Vardy is unlikely to join.

Why won't Vardy join Chelsea or Man Utd

According to The Athletic, Vardy wants to stay at Leicester and talks over a new contract have reportedly progressed well.

His current deal is set to expire in 2023 after signing his last extension two years ago, but discussions over a new deal are well underway and those within the club appear confident in reaching an agreement to ensure Vardy stays put at Leicester.
