Manchester United have moved to confirm which squad number new signing Casemiro will take following his transfer from Real Madrid.

The Brazil international is the Red Devils' fourth major arrival of the summer, joining Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez new arrivals at the club.

With five Champions League titles under his belt, much is expected of the midfielder, who was presented to fans prior to Monday's 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the Premier League.

There has been no surprise over the squad number he has been given by Man Utd, who officially announced the decision on Friday, following an accurate report days earlier over which figure Casemiro will have on his shirt.

Casemiro will wear the No.18 jersey at Manchester United, following in the footsteps of Old Trafford legend Paul Scholes, another central midfielder with a reputation for enjoying a hard tackle.

It will not be the first time in his career that Casemiro has worn the No.18 shirt, with the midfielder having started out his life at Real Madrid wearing that jersey for the Castilla side. When he graduated to the first team, he took the No.38 jersey before switching to the No.16 in 2013/14. After one year on loan at Porto, he took on the No.14 shirt and has been in that jersey ever since.

Casemiro would appear to have an affection for the number 8, having started his career with Sao Paulo with that figure on his back before switching to 28 in his final two campaigns with the club.

Who has worn No.18 for Man Utd in the past?

Casemiro will become just the sixth player to wear the No.18 jersey for Manchester United in the Premier League era.

Scholes is most readily associated with the jersey, having spent 14 years with the shift, while Ashley Young possessed it for eight seasons, too.

Darren Ferguson, son of Sir Alex, Simon Davies and Fraizer Campbell are the others to have had the jersey.
