Manchester United are attempting to sign Kevin Trapp from Eintracht Frankfurt after David de Gea's shocking start to the season.

De Gea has been a United stalwart for more than a decade, spending much of time since his 2011 move from Atletico Madrid as arguably the best goalkeeper in the Premier League.

But De Gea was always a shot-stopper and not a ball-player, and the game has moved past him in recent seasons - something that was painfully obvious in United's 4-0 loss at Brentford last Saturday.

While his attempt to save Jay Dasilva's opener was poor, De Gea's play for the second was embarrassing. His pass out to Christian Eriksen played the Dane into trouble and Mathias Jensen gleefully capitalized for 2-0.

De Gea held his hands up after the game, telling journalists that "I think I cost my team three points today. It was a poor performance from myself," but his time could be up at Old Trafford.

Sport Bild journalist Christian Falk reports that United have made an offer for Trapp, the 32-year-old who won the Europa League with Frankfurt last season.

The Germany international has a contract which runs until 2024 at the Deutsche Bank Park, and is ranked at just €7m by Football Transfers sophisticated inhouse algorithm.

How good is Trapp?

Trapp is one of the strongest goalkeepers in Germany and would have had many more than his six Germany caps had he not been in the same generation as Bayern Munich's Manuel Neuer.

He has moved ahead of Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Bernd Leno as Neuer's first understudy in recent Germany squads, and his stats last season leave De Gea, quite literally, standing.

Trapp was better than 70 per cent of Bundesliga goalkeepers for defensive actions outside of his penalty area last season and attempted an average of 28 passes per game.

He also saved 73 per cent of shots on his goal compared to De Gea's 68 per cent in the Premier League.
