Leroy Sane: Why Man Utd won't sign Bayern Munich winger
Manchester United have been linked with a transfer for Bayern Munich attacker Leroy Sane, who previously spent time with rivals Manchester City.
The Red Devils are scrambling for offensive additions to their squad, with an injury to Anthony Martial ahead of Sunday’s Premier League opener against Brighton exposing just how fragile a position they find themselves whether Cristiano Ronaldo leaves the club.
Numerous players have been linked with a move to Old Trafford, including Red Bull Salzburg forward Benjamin Sesko, but with competition for the Slovenia international likely to be intense, they are also studying other options.
Sane is an unlikely target, however. Although he has had difficulties in holding down a position at Bayern, there are several reasons why he is likely to stay put.
Why Sane will not move to Man Utd
Firstly, Bayern Munich are unlikely to sell. The straightforward explanation for this is that they are chronically lacking in attacking depth following the sale of Robert Lewandowski to Barcelona. Sadio Mane has arrived from Liverpool and 17-year-old Mathys Tel has signed from Rennes, but in terms of senior options in these advanced areas, they are sorely lacking.
Indeed, along with Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman, Sane is one of the only players in the squad who could be considered in the ‘prime’ of his career between 24 and 30.
Sane, too, wants to stay at Bayern, where he has a contract that runs until 2025, giving him three more years on his deal.
The 26-year-old has made a bright start to this season, scoring in the German Supercup and coming off the bench to create a goal in Friday’s emphatic victory over Frankfurt. And though he struggled to hold down a regular spot in the first team last season, he still played nearly 3000 minutes in all competitions, scoring 14 goals and creating 15.
Man Utd’s interest in Sane, then, is unlikely to materialise into anything both, with both the player and Bayern Munich wanting no transfer.
