Manchester United agreed a deal with Real Madrid over the transfer of midfielder Casemiro in a bid to improve their fortunes for the rest of the season.

The midfielder won’t be able to make his debut in Monday evening’s fixture against Liverpool, but he’s set to be presented to the Old Trafford crowd just before kick-off

The Brazilian could make his debut against Southampton at the weekend, and that could be the first chance to show the Red Devils’ fans his qualities.

The signing comes at a big cost, with United having already agreed a £60 million fee for the signing, with a further £10 million in add-ons possibly going the Spanish champions’ way in the future.

Casemiro arrives with huge financial risk

With Casemiro’s arrival, the five-time Champions League winner will be one of the highest-earners in the squad, putting him in the same bracket as David de Gea, one of the top earners at the club.

De Gea reportedly makes £375,000-a-week, more than the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Jadon Sancho and others, and is only topped by Cristiano Ronaldo’s wage.

Casemiro is set to earn a similar amount – which, according to some, is double of what he made when he was at Real Madrid – and that is one of the reasons he agreed to the move.

The Brazilian is also set to sign a four-year deal with an option for a further year, signing until at least 2026, and on top of the £60 million fee, £10 million in add-ons and his wages, the overall package could cost £140m (€165m)

This is, of course, a big risk for Manchester United, but that is what is to happen once a club leaves things so late in the transfer window, and they’ve needed to sign a defensive midfielder for many years.

Erik ten Hag hasn’t had the best start to life at the club, with 2-1 and 4-0 defeats to Brentford to kick-off the season, and Liverpool won’t make things easy.

He’ll be hoping the addition of one of the game’s best defensive midfielders can significantly improve his and his team’s fortunes, and help his side rejuvenate their season.
