Chelsea’s world-record transfer spend during the summer window might have been even greater had they managed to sign Edson Alvarez from Ajax.

The Blues made a late bid for the 24-year-old Mexico international but ultimately failed in their attempts to sign him.

Instead, they moved for Denis Zakaria on loan from Juventus, but it is FootballTransfers’ understanding that Thomas Tuchel will make a renewed attempt for Alvarez in January.

Chelsea will have been impressed with the manner in which the player has reacted to Ajax denying him the chance to leave, which was logical given that the approach was made late and there was no time to find a replacement. In addition to this, Ajax’s squad was pillaged this summer by clubs around Europe signing their leading talent.

Alvarez’s impressive mentality

Speaking today, Ajax head coach Alfred Schreuder indicated how Alvarez, who was reportedly angry on Deadline Day, reacted to the club’s decision not to sell him.

Speaking to ESPN he said: “Chelsea reported themselves for Edson Alvarez on the final day and Alvarez wanted this. For one day he was feeling very down but yesterday he told me: 'Coach, I am here and I will give my 100% again.’”

The player was as good as his word as he played his part in a 4-0 win over Cambuur in the Eredivisie.

Chelsea, meanwhile, will have been impressed with the player’s professional stance on Ajax’s call. Indeed, this type of mentality is the type of thinking that top clubs appreciate when they move for players.

If the Mexican retains his form beyond the World Cup, he will get his chance at a big move again, and there is indeed every chance that Chelsea will be back during the January transfer window to take another look.
