‘Just tattoos and vibes’ – How Liverpool and Man Utd fans reacted to Nunez’s Ajax performance
Liverpool attacker Darwin Nunez once again found himself in the spotlight on Tuesday after coming on as a substitute in his side’s 2-1 win over Ajax.
The club-record signing has made a mixed start to life at Anfield. After netting in his Premier League debut against Fulham, and in the Community Shield victory over Manchester City, he was subsequently sent off against Crystal Palace and drew a blank in the derby against Everton.
He was reduced to a cameo role against Ajax on Tuesday, which had mixed results. His arrival on the field coincided with a notable upturn in Liverpool’s performance, but equally Nunez missed a very presentable chance by dragging a shot wide in an untidy manner.
Joel Matip spared his blushes by grabbing a late winner, yet the debate over Nunez continues to be a hot one.
Inevitably, it has been played out on social media, where fans of Liverpool and Manchester United, who narrowly missed out on the player, have taken an interest.
Liverpool fans defending Nunez
While there has been some dissent from Liverpool fans over the quality of Nunez, who could cost up to €100 million, there is broad backing from the Anfield club over a man who has played only six times for their club.
Just typed in Darwin Núñez in the search function and pretty much every comment under top tweets were positive ones. It just goes to show that not everyone’s an idiot with a knee jerk negative opinion. It’s way too early to write him off. Some people just love slating players.

Darwin Nunez changed the game when he came on.

I’m absolutely shocked at some of the tweets from so-called Liverpool ‘fans’ about Darwin Núñez tonight. He’s just joined a new club in a new country, already scored and assisted, and we looked better after he came on tonight. What happened to supporting all of the players?

And they are not the only ones backing Nunez to come good.
I’m not his biggest fan, but Darwin Nunez receives a lot of unnecessary criticism - Liverpool only looked like scoring when he came on. Elite movement, the goals will come.

Nunez criticism
At the same time, though, there are fans growing twitchy over his performances.

I miss sadio mane because Darwin nunez is fucking useless.
When will y’all realize we wasted 100 million on Nunez ??— James (@Iamcarnagee) September 10, 2022
And of course, fans of rival teams, most notably Man Utd and Man City are having a field day at his expense.
Every game I watch I feel more and more relieved United didn’t sign Darwin Nunez for over 80 million

Everyday I thank god that Liverpool got to Darwin Núñez before we did. We appreciate it.

I feel Darwin Nunez has not been the same player since winning the World Cup at The Kingpower Stadium

It is unclear which Nunez will emerge from these early days at the club, with Liverpool’s biggest signing having shown a mix of the brilliant and the lamentable thus far.
