Manchester United are ready to hand Marcus Rashford a new long-term contract as a reward for his strong start to life under Erik ten Hag.

Rashford has been one of the big winners as Cristiano Ronaldo has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford, with his speed and energy having seen him lead the line in the early days under the new regime.

The England forward has started each of Man Utd’s side games in the Premier League this season, scoring three times and assisting two. His importance to the team has been underlined by the fact that he has been rested for both Europa League matches – a sure sign that he is regarded as an undisputed starter.

What has been especially about Rashford’s contribution is that his goals have come in big matches against Liverpool and Arsenal, while it was is switch to a centre-forward role against the Anfield side that kickstarted a four-game winning streak domestically.

Rashford’s new deal

Out of contract in 2023, Man Utd have the option to trigger a one-year extension in his deal but are instead outlining the possibility of giving him a new five-year deal, according to the Daily Express.

The report suggests that talks are ongoing, with the club not concerned presently about interest coming from PSG, who could theoretically sign him as a free agent in 2023. United, though, can trigger the one-year extension option unilaterally, so this is not a genuine possibility.

Meanwhile, the 24-year-old is set to receive a significant bump in wages. Rashford presently earns £10.4 million per year but with Jadon Sancho taking home £18.2m, it is thought his salary will be bumped up to around this level.

Man Utd have a number of players approaching free agency next summer, including Cristiano Ronaldo and David de Gea, so the scope for Rashford earning a greater salary is high given both of these big earners are liable to leave.
