Gakpo: I spoke to Ten Hag about Man Utd transfer
PSV forward Cody Gakpo has been discussing the links he had to a transfer to Manchester United over the summer, and admits a deal to go to Old Trafford was close.
Gakpo was a major target for Manchester United, as new boss Erik ten Hag was a keen admirer of the player having seen first-hand how good he can be in the Eredivisie.
Ten Hag was right in his judgement, and Gakpo has shown his best form for PSV this season, scoring 13 goals and providing 11 assists across all competitions this season.
Now, Gakpo has spoken about the transfer rumours and reveals how close he was a to a move to Manchester United over the summer.
Gakpo makes transfer admission
Speaking to The Times, the 23-year-old said: “I was close to leaving [in the summer], I spoke to Erik ten Hag a few times at Manchester United.
“In the end the deal didn’t go through, which was a shame, for me and my development, and because Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs in the world,” Gakpo added.
Gakpo has shone both domestically and in Europe, being involved in more goals than Erling Haaland over the course of the season so far, and is on course for bigger things in the coming months.

He’s certain to fly out to Qatar as part of the Dutch squad for the World Cup this year, as Louis van Gaal is also a fan of his style of play and he will be a valuable member of the squad.
Other than Manchester United, clubs such as Arsenal, Everton and Leeds United have been keeping tabs on his progress with a view to making a move for him in the future.
According to recent reports, though, Gakpo only wants to go to a club where he can enjoy European football, giving Manchester United and Arsenal more hope of securing his signature.
