Real Madrid and Barcelona should take note of Haaland release clause
Erling Haaland will have the possibility to leave Manchester City before his contract expires in 2027, according to a report.
Haaland joined Pep Guardiola’s side from Borussia Dortmund in the summer, with City paying just €60 million to trigger his release clause with the Bundesliga side.
Although he was well down the ranking of most expensive transfers of the summer, there is little doubt that he is heading to be the best. Having played just 11 matches with his new team, he is already on 18 goals.
Haaland was chased by numerous clubs over the course of his time at Dortmund. The late Mino Raiola, who was his agent, suggested that as many as 10 of Europe’s leading sides were chasing him at one stage, so it was quite the coup for City to win the race.
Fabrizio Romano, meanwhile, has revealed that Bayern Munich were pushing particularly hard to sign the player in the summer, despite public declarations otherwise, while Real Madrid and Barcelona were also heavily interested in him.
Haaland decided in April, though, that Manchester City would be his next club because of his admiration for the project.
Haaland’s Man City release clause
Those clubs he rejected, though, will be interested to hear that there is a backdoor in his Manchester City contract that could allow him to depart early.
Romano has revealed there is a release clause in his agreement with the club that is for a “huge”, unspecified fee.
It is stressed, however, that it is not the type of clause that will come into force in the next few months or probably not even before 2024. Indeed, he is said to be “in love” with the club.
The existence of this get-out agreement, though, adds fuel to the speculation that he will not be a City player for life. His father has previous stated that he is likely to only be at the club for three or four years.
For Bayern, Real Madrid and Barcelona, it’s well worth keeping tabs on Haaland’s progress because his release clause means he’s unlikely to see out his Man City contract.
