Michael Edwards to reject Chelsea advances
Former Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards is reportedly set to reject Chelsea's advances to add him to their boardroom staff.
Edwards, 42, stepped down from his role at Liverpool at the end of last season after 11 years of service at Anfield after joining from Tottenham Hotspur.
Edwards, who specialised in transfer activity, garnered worldwide praise for his strategy in the transfer market at Liverpool, with the signings of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Alisson, Virgil Van Dijk and many more success stories coming under his leadership.
After deciding to leave Liverpool at the conclusion of the 2021/22 campaign, Edwards immediately became of interest to clubs around Europe, including Chelsea who had just undergone an ownership change from Roman Abramovich to Todd Boehly.
Changes at Chelsea
Boehly made radical changes behind-the-scenes at Stamford Bridge, including removing Marina Granovskaia, Petr Cech and Bruce Buck from their positions in the boardroom.
The American billionaire also named himself as interim sporting director and was hence involved in all of Chelsea's summer transfer business, with the help of former head coach Thomas Tuchel.
That business included the signings of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Barcelona, Raheem Sterling from Manchester City, Marc Cucurella from Brighton & Hove Albion and many more.
However, Boehly as sporting director isn't the long-term plan for Chelsea, with the Blues scouting across world football to find a permanent replacement.
Edwards has been their number one target for a while, with the former Liverpool transfer expert rejecting the Blues' advances due to a desire to spend a prolonged period away from football.
Chelsea had believed they'd be able to change Edwards' mind and convince him to return to football, but the Sun have now reported that their offer fell on deaf ears, with Edwards still set on taking an extended break before returning to work.
