Mbappe was very nearly a Real Madrid player at the end of last season, and los Blancos had already prepareda for his unveiling at the Santiago Bernabeu when he made an about turn in May, signing fresh terms in Paris which made him the best paid sportsman ever.

Mbappe has played phenomenally well since, scoring 19 time in 20 PSG games this season before top-scoring at the World Cup with eight goals, the final three of which came via a hat-trick in the final, with France ultimately edged on penalties by Argentina and Mbappe's clubmate Lionel Messi.

Mbappe played up front for most of Sunday's showpiece at Lusail Stadium after Olivier Giroud was subbed off in the first half, but he started the game on the left flank - something he wants to do at PSG but can't with Messi and Neymar given the positions deeper and wider off the point of the attack.

He has made clear his frustration at being forced to play as a No.9 at club level, and he is reportedly willing to take a pay cut in order to find a sporting project which caters to his tactical preference.

Man Utd interest

"Manchester United have already expressed their willingness to sign him," reports Spanish daily Sport. "While Chelsea and Liverpool are considering him. Florentino Perez, in Madrid, remains attentive to the evolution of this case and will enter a bid, as long as their economic parameters are clear from the outset."

While Real will pull out if Mbappe's transfer fee climbs much higher than the €147.3 million he is valued at by Football Transfers' in-house algorithm, United are unlikely yo have any such caution.

The Glazer family made the Red Devils available for sale in November and tech giants like Apple and Amazon, as well as private bids from Saudi Arabia, have been touted as potential buyers.
