Manchester United have held talks with the agent of Marco Reus and are an option for the Borussia Dortmund midfielder in the summer transfer window.

Sport Bild’s Christian Falk reports that there was a secret meeting between Man Utd manager Erik ten Hag and Reus’ representative, during which they discussed the possibility of a deal.

Ten Hag is said to have been “interested” in the prospect of adding the 48-time capped Germany international Reus to his squad, with the 33-year-old a free agent in the summer.

Rues has been at Dortmund since 2012, when he joined from Borussia Monchengladbach and has played over 350 times for BVB in all competitions.

Ten Hag is known to want to reinforce his midfield, but given that other areas of the squad, such as the attack and defence, are liable to take precedence, his budget for strengthening this sector could be limited. Reus could provide an ideal stop-gap solution for a season or two.

Reus: More Eriksen than Schweinsteiger?

The former Ajax boss has already shown a willingness to roll the dice with veterans in the transfer market, having signed Christian Eriksen on a free transfer from Brentford last summer just a year after the Denmark international collapsed on the field because of cardiac arrest. That move is presently working out very well for both parties.

For Man Utd fans, though, the Reus deal holds echoes of the move in 2015 to sign Bastian Schweinsteiger to the club. The Bayern Munich player was hailed as a missing part of the midfield but proved to be an expensive flop as he struggled with injuries throughout his time at the club and when he was on the field looked beyond his peak.

Reus has similarly battled physical problems this season, with a succession of ankle issues hampering him before the World Cup break and restricting him to just 12 appearances for Dortmund, scoring three goals and creating four more in those matches.
