Amad Diallo's fate no longer in Man Utd's hands

The fate of Amad Diallo for what remains of the 2022/23 season has been taken out of Manchester United's hands following an update on his loan spell at Sunderland.

The 20-year-old joined the Championship side on loan in August and has become a key player as they push for promotion to the Premier League.

Sunderland are currently ninth in the second tier, but are only three points behind third-placed Watford, and Amad has played his part in their success, with seven goals and one assist in 21 league appearances.

Following his impressive form for Tony Mowbray's side, and the drop-off from €100 million summer signing Antony, Amad has been linked with an early return back to Old Trafford.

Antony, 22, arrived at Man Utd from Ajax last summer, but has failed to impress, scoring three times and not assisting a single goal in 16 Premier League and Europa League appearances.

However, Man Utd will not be able to count upon Amad in the second-half of the season. That is because the recall clause in Amad's loan deal at Sunderland has expired, according to the Sunderland Echo's Phil Smith. It means he will stays at the club on loan until the end of the campaign.

The Old Trafford side paid an initial €21.3 million to sign the Ivory Coast forward, despite him never starting a senior game for Atalanta. He has made nine appearances for Man Utd since arriving, scoring one goal and providing one assist.

He embarked on a loan move to Rangers last season, netting three goals in 13 games in Scotland, before returning to England to join Sunderland in the 2022 summer transfer window.

Amad also recently snubbed Cristiano Ronaldo and named Marcus Rashford as the best player he has ever played with during his career. The Englishman is in fine form this season, with his goal against Arsenal taking his tally to 17 in all competitions in 2022/23.

Diallo will return to Man Utd at the end of the season, hoping to make a mark at the club.

His deal at Old Trafford is set to expire in 2025, meaning he must prove to Ten Hag that he's worthy of a place in the squad.
