Why Man City could ruin Tottenham's Pedro Porro transfer

A clause in Pedro Porro’s contract at Sporting Lisbon could prove trouble for Tottenham.

Spurs have been back and forth in their pursuit of the right-back, with claims in the UK media that Sporting have moved the goalposts.

The Premier League side’s officials thought that everything had been concluded and a medical was all that was left.

But the deal - thought to be around €44m - now hangs in the balance.

Amid all this, Manchester City, who sold Porro to Sporting, have let Joao Cancelo leave on loan to Bayern Munich.

The side also retains a buyback clause in Porro’s contract of around €20m.

Is it theorised that Sporting are playing hard to get owing to fresh interest from Porro’s former club and that City may well bring back the wingback to the Eithad to replace the departed Cancelo.

Indeed, Sporting reneged on previously agreed terms before calling the deal off once again on Monday morning - while Spurs were preparing for the Spanish full-back's medical.

President Frederico Varandas told Porro, who was reportedly distraught with the news, that he could leave the club after their cup final against Porto.

Sporting had already lined up former Arsenal star Hector Bellerin as a replacement from Barcelona, where he’s fallen out of favour.

Porro has three goals and 11 assists in all competitions under Ruben Amorim.

Tottenham currently have Emerson Royal, Matt Doherty and Djed Spence, as options for right-back but their form has been capricious or they have been scarcely played.

Spurs' Hincapie links

Spurs have been linked also on Piero Hincapie too.

German outlet Bild reported that they have submitted an official bid of €25mn for the 21-year-old defender.

Hincapie, who has already won 21 caps for Ecuador, has made 54 appearances for Bayer Leverkusen since joining from Argentinian side Talleres in August 2021.

He is under contract until June 2026 and is well-liked by Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso.
