Manchester United were looking to sign a midfielder back in August and were running out of time before quickly agreeing a deal for the Brazilian from Real Madrid.

He signed on a mega €70 million fee from Los Blancos, leaving behind the defending European champions to move to a club that couldn’t offer Champions League football.

Now, it’s been revealed the move was heavily influenced by Raphael Varane, his former team-mate at Real Madrid who is at Manchester United himself.

Varane backed Casemiro signing

Manchester United spent much of the summer chasing Frenkie de Jong and then Adrien Rabiot, so the move for Casemiro came as a bit of a surprise to many.

After the club began the season with defeats to Brighton and Brentford, there were doubts over whether he would join, but the move was certain to happen as the Brazilian assured the club he would make the transfer.

They were helped massively by Varane who, according to The Athletic, gave the club a glowing review of Casemiro’s style and character and assured the club he wasn’t moving for an easy pay day.

Varane and Casemiro were together at Real Madrid from 2013 to 2020 before the French defender’s departure to Old Trafford.

The decision has been vindicated as Casemiro has delivered on his fee so far, providing performances that have pushed Manchester United to the top four.

They will be hoping to stay in that territory and provide the club Champions League football for the 2022-23 season, before they can make new signings.

So far in this campaign, Erik ten Hag has made some smart signings for the club as the likes of Lisandro Martinez, Christian Eriksen and Tyrell Malacia have all improved the side.
