The Lazio ace, who has been linked with a move away from the Italian club for some time, has his contract up in June 2024 and has told his current club that he has no intention of renewing.

A report in Todofichajes suggests that the Magpies had put in a €60m bid for the midfielder, though this is yet to be backed up by UK publications.

In any case, Newcastle's social media went wild as one fan posted a screenshot of a private flight that left Lazio and landed in their city on Saturday.

Newcastle United’s January transfer plans

Newcastle are after a central midfielder and it’s thought that they will opt to bring one in this January window should the opportunity arise.

The Daily Mail have linked them to Wolves player Ruben Neves, saying that the 25-year-old, who has 18 months to run on his contract, has hinted before that he is unlikely to sign a new one.

The club will be shrewd in the market, with sporting director Dan Ashworth recently saying to Sky Sports ahead of their Carabao Cup quarter-final victory over Leicester: "There are a couple of factors in there. We've got a 25-man squad now, so we'd need to trade and the second thing is, Financial Fair Play binds every club.

"Each financial year you have budgets which you can use so we need to make sure we're in that budget. We can't just go and spend because we fancy it. It has to be part of the plan.

"That does lead into those sort of conversations. We're in a wonderful position in the league and we want to be able to sustain that. We've got a really good squad."
