What's happening with Mason Greenwood?

Serious charges against Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood have been dropped, but his club future remains in the balance.

Greenwood was accused of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault, but the Crown Prosecution service cleared the 21-year-old of all charges on 2 February.

Greenwood, an academy graduate who has made more then 100 first-team appearances for the United, hasn't played since 22 January 2022, and the club are now conducting an internal investigation.

According to ESPN, the Red Devils will consult with 'leadership groups' from the men's and women's teams in order to gauge their thoughts on Greenwood's potential reintegration.

'No collective view'

"Sources have told ESPN that while there has been no collective view put forward by players, a number of individuals have concerns about welcoming Greenwood back to the club," they write.

"Key partners are monitoring the internal investigation and will make a decision about their relationship with the club once a decision on Greenwood's future is made."

That decision isn't expected to be made public until the summer, with United keen for there to be no distractions for Erik ten Hag in the second half of the season.

Greenwood remains under contract, for now, on a £100,000 per week salary. His exiting deal runs until 30 June 2025, with a club option to extend that by another season.

Whether or not United release Greenwood remains to be seen, but he has other potential suitors should he be made available, on a free transfer or otherwise.

Turkish outfit Fenerbahce are the latest club to be linked with a move for the one-time England international, with the club reportedly willing to face the criticism that might come with Greenwood's acquisition.

United have said publicly that they unwilling to comment beyond the fact they are conducting the aforementioned investigation, as they prepare to take on Barcelona in the Europa League on Thursday.
