Will Chelsea sack Graham Potter?

The pressure on Chelsea manager Graham Potter ramps up with each negative result, with the question inevitably following: will he be sacked?

Following the weekend’s Premier League fixtures, Chelsea lie ninth in the standings, some 10 points short of the Champions League spots and on a run of three successive draws that represent a missed opportunity to close the gap to the top four.

The Blues, though, have spent an unprecedented amount on transfers over the course of the last two windows, heaping expectations on them ahead of what is effectively a transitional season.

Already they have dispensed with Thomas Tuchel following the summer window, so could Potter go before the end of the season?

Potter safe for now

According to The Athletic, Chelsea are not considering sacking the former Brighton manager at present. Indeed, it is stated that the owners have “no concerns” that their club have gone on a run that has seen them win just two of their last 13 Premier League matches.

Just as the Blues have placed faith in a string of promising young players by handing them lengthy contracts after signing them for sizeable sums, they are prepared to put their faith in their manager on a long-term basis.

Indeed, the report states that the Stamford Bridge side feel they have one of the “best managers in the game”. The Blues board appreciate, meanwhile, that this is a season of transition and it is stressed that Potter will not be judged on whether Champions League football is attained this season.

Furthermore, there are still changes to come.

Chelsea have also look at Arsenal’s success and have been impressed with their patience with Mikel Arteta and a young squad. Indeed, the Gunners boss found himself in the position that Potter presently does in September 2021, but he has since led his team to the top of the Premier League.

In short, Potter is expected to be given years, not months to turn Chelsea’s fortunes around, so for the moment his job is safe.
