Robertson finds Klopp 'outstanding' answer to Liverpool midfield problems

Liverpool star Andrew Robertson has dropped manager Jurgen Klopp a subtle hint over a midfielder to consider in the summer transfer window.

The centre of the park for the Reds has been a major problem position, with many critics pointing to a lack of energy as one of the reasons why Liverpool have fallen out of the top four in the Premier League as things stand.

A summer revolution in that area of the park is likely, with James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Fabinho just three of the Reds’ players who find their futures speculated upon ahead of the transfer window.

Robertson, meanwhile, has given Klopp a subtle hint of a player who could be both available and useful for Liverpool: Brighton midfielder Billy Gilmour.

Speaking to Viaplay Sports after leading Scotland to a shock 2-0 win over Spain at Hampden on Tuesday, Robertson was asked about the strength in depth of the national team and pointed to one player who has caught his eye.

“If you look at the bench and look at the lads who haven’t been used... people like Billy Gilmour who have been training outstanding. The wee man’s been training so well, Lewis Ferguson, all these young lads that are coming in and pushing all of us,” he said.

Gilmour’s unhappy season

Gilmour, who has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of just €8.6 million, has become something of a forgotten man at Brighton as he was collateral damage of Graham Potter’s move to Chelsea. Signed in the summer, he is not favoured by Roberto De Zerbi.

As such, he has played only 155 minutes of Premier League football this season but cut his teeth impressively during his time at Stamford Bridge.

The 21-year-old won Man of the Match on debut in the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League with Chelsea, while he was also given the same award on his European Championship debut with Scotland in a 0-0 draw with England at Wembley in 2021.

Gilmour’s talent is not in dispute – and who better to unlock it than Klopp?
