Five goalkeeper transfer targets Liverpool can sign to compete with Alisson

Liverpool are planning a rejuvenation of their midfield this summer as they look to bounce back from a disappointing season but Jurgen Klopp is also reportedly hoping to sign a goalkeeper in a busy transfer window.

The Reds sit outside the Champions League places on the back of an inconsistent campaign filled with injuries, poor form and regrets over mistakes of transfer windows passed.

However, a rare bright point in Liverpool’s season has been Alisson but the Brazilian’s reliance has prompted backup Caoimhin Kelleher to consider his future, with reports that the Irish shotstopper is ready to leave for regular first team football.

Should Liverpool grant Kelleher his wish, the Reds will be in the market for another competitor to Alisson but, with transfer funds potentially limited, Klopp may have to scour the bargain bin for a replacement, although he could have some reasonable options to choose from.

Which goalkeepers could Liverpool target this summer?

David Raya (Brentford)

Liverpool are hoping to seal a move for Jude Bellingham this summer, which could cost in excess of £100 million, meaning a move for Brentford’s David Raya could prove difficult to pull off.

However, the Spaniard has impressed for the Bees since their promotion to the Premier League and he is expected to leave the club this summer when he enters the final 12 months of his contract.

Manchester United and Chelsea are also credited with an interest, while Brentford boss Thomas Frank has claimed that Raya would command a fee in excess of £40 million – a huge fee, although Liverpool would be securing a long-term top-level competitor to Alisson.

Edouard Mendy (Chelsea)

It seems a long time ago that Edouard Mendy was named as the Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year after helping Chelsea win the Champions League…but a lot can change in two years, as Liverpool will know first-hand.

Mendy was a revelation for Chelsea upon his arrival in 2021 as he replaced the out-of-sorts Kepa Arrizabalaga but he has since lost his place to the Spaniard, making just 11 appearances this campaign.

Chelsea are keen to sell players after their recent outlay while Mendy may be open to securing a long-term contract elsewhere, with his current deal set to expire in 2025, meaning a move could be affordable and realistic for all parties.

Martin Dubravka (Newcastle)

Premier League-proven, experienced and capable, there was a reason why Manchester United chose to sign Martin Dubravka on loan from Newcastle last summer as their own backup goalkeeper.

The Slovakian has made more than 100 Premier League appearances and was the Magpies’ number one before they signed Nick Pope last year, prompting United to loan Dubravka, although he returned to Newcastle in January after only playing twice for Erik ten Hag’s men.

Newcastle would be willing to let Dubravka leave for a nominal fee and could represent the best value for money backup who is instantly able to slot into the squad.

Dominik Livakovic (Dinamo Zagreb)

Dominik Livakovic will feel as though there is no better time for him to make a move to a major European side after his impressive performances for Croatia at the 2022 World Cup.

The 28-year-old has spent his entire career in his homeland but was linked with a move to Bayern Munich in January after his displays in Qatar, where he was renowned for his penalty saving ability.

Livakovic would cost a relatively small fee and he would relish the chance to play for a team like Liverpool, even as a backup, giving Klopp a shrewd option for his deputy goalkeeper.

Bono (Sevilla)

Another star keeper of the World Cup was Morocco’s Yassine Bounou or ‘Bono’ as he is known, who has impressed for Sevilla as well as with his performances in Qatar.

The 31-year-old is certainly on the older side but that is rarely a concern for keepers and could mean Bono is available for a relatively cheap fee.

Bayern were linked with a £26m move for him in January but he chose to see out the season in Spain and Liverpool could feasibly secure one of the best performing goalkeepers in the world as a serviceable deputy to Alisson.
