Wrexham appear increasingly serious about signing Real Madrid legend Gareth Bale this summer, with co-owner Ryan Reynolds once again taking to social media to fuel speculation of a remarkable transfer.

Bale is officially retired after a playing career that saw him turn out for Southampton, Tottenham Real Madrid and LA Galaxy, with the Wales international quitting the game following World Cup 2022 in Qatar.

However, Reynolds, who is best known for his acting roles in Deadpool, and co-Wrexham owner Rob McElhenney, another Hollywood star, appear determined to lure the player out of retirement and back into club football with a side that won its place in the English Football League last weekend thanks to a 3-1 home win over Boreham Wood.

That Bale could move to Wrexham has been rumoured since Reynolds and McElhenney took over the club in 2021, and the pair appear determined to fuel such whispers.

What if...?

Their latest attempt comes via a Tweet from Reynolds, which shows Bale celebrating in a Wrexham shirt in front of a packed crowd.

Reynolds’ tag for the picture: ‘What if...’ is a nod to the Marvel series of the same name, in which storylines are reimagined with a character making an often subtle but crucial change to their actions.

This latest social media hint comes just days after Reynolds made a desperate social media play designed to lure Bale into contract talks.

“Hey @GarethBale11 let’s play golf, where I totally won’t spend 4 hours trying to convince you to un-retire for one last magical season,” he Tweeted alongside several Welsh flags.

Reynolds’ request did not fall on deaf ears.

Bale replied: “Depends what course.”

To which Reynolds’ said: “I will shave a professional-grade golf course into Rob’s back if you’ll give Wrexham a season.”

For the moment, Bale to Wrexham is just fantasy, but Reynolds and McElhenney are doing everything in their power to make an unlikely transfer happen.
