Manchester United are poised to reverse a contract decision the club made a year ago, which was one of the reasons for Cristiano Ronaldo’s unhappiness at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils endured one of their worst seasons in the modern era in 2021/22 as they were only able to finish sixth in the Premier League standings and therefore missed out on the Champions League.

As a consequence, the entire playing staff had their wages slashed by 20% - a decision that FootballTransfers understands infuriated Ronaldo, who felt that his performances were to such a standard that it was not deserved.

Although the Portugal legend ultimately departed after a falling out with manager Erik ten Hag, he was already unhappy with the club before the Dutchman arrived.

In any case, with Ten Hag having led to Red Devils to a likely top-four finish after their 2-2 draw against Tottenham on Thursday, the Daily Mail reports that the club are ready to give their players a net pay rise of 20% should they secure a return to the Champions League.

The report notes that the players who saw their wages cut last summer will go back to their original wage while those who have joined in the last season will see their pay bumped as a bonus of the club’s return to the big time.

Ten Hag leading Man Utd to top four

United look good to seal a Champions League spot. After all, they are six points clear of both Tottenham and Aston Villa with two games in hand. Liverpool are a point further back and the Red Devils also have the advantage of a game spare over the Anfield club.

Indeed, had Ten Hag’s side not given away a two-goal advantage over Tottenham in London, they would have been all but in the top four. Nevertheless, Man Utd have enjoyed a resurgent season and their players are set to see the benefit via their wage packets.
