Todd Boehly’s Chelsea role cut after disastrous season

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly will reportedly reduce his involvement at the club next season, as the Blues look to bounce back from their abysmal 2022-23.

With two games of the campaign remaining, Chelsea can finish no higher than 11th in the Premier League – having spent more than €650m across the summer and January transfer windows.

If Boehly was hoping for instant success through lavish expenditure, it’s fair to say that’s backfired monumentally: the Blues have sacked two managers this term and will record their lowest league placing since at least 1996.

Boehly’s consortium completed their takeover of Chelsea last May, and the American businessman was, per Bloomberg data, spending roughly 50% of his time on ‘day-to-day’ activities at the West London club.

However, that figure has now dropped by more than half to 20%, with the 49-year-old said to be shifting more of his focus to other ventures away from Stamford Bridge.

Despite a rough introduction to the rigours of English football, Boehly sounds determined to succeed with the Blues, recently telling the Milken Institute’s Global Conference: “Our view is that this is a long-term project and we’re committed to the long term. We very much believe we are going to figure it out.”

Todd does Chelsea a favour?

With Mauricio Pochettino due to be named Chelsea’s new boss, yet another new era is about to begin at Stamford Bridge.

And if the Blues are to enjoy some semblance of success next season, they really ought to lay the foundations with a more measured summer transfer window.

Boehly’s apparent decision to take a backseat from his duties might just serve the two-time European champions well in that respect.
