Liverpool in talks to sell 20-year-old with better goals record than Darwin Nunez

Liverpool finished the season fifth in the Premier League – a disastrous campaign by the recent standards set by Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The Reds’ issues date back to last summer, when they got things wrong in the transfer window, notably failing to recruit sufficiently to bolster an aging midfield.

But the Anfield club are also about to admit they got things wrong up front, too, with one of their summer 2022 arrivals set to be sold just a year after arriving at the club.

Liverpool had high hopes for Fabio Carvalho when he joined from Fulham for €5.9 million, but the winger has not caught light as the Reds might have imagined.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Klopp’s side are “in talks” with a foreign club over a permanent move for the Portugal U21 winger, who is under contract until 2027.

The transfer window specialist also reports that there are numerous loan options on the table from Premier League rivals, with Carvalho eager to move to the club where there is a project that suits him.

It does not appear, though, that he has found a solution that suits him as yet.

Carvalho’s frustrating Liverpool season

Carvalho has been given few chances to impress at Anfield and has not been given more than 10 minutes of a Premier League match since October, often finding himself glued to the bench – and sometimes not even getting that far.

Despite only playing 340 minutes of Premier League football this season, he bagged a couple of goals in the 9-0 win over Bournemouth and then in the 2-1 success over Newcastle four days later.

This in itself is a record that shows Carvalho’s promise. Indeed, the youngster fares well compared to marquee summer signing Darwin Nunez. The Portuguese has a Premier League goal every 170 minutes for the 2022/23 season, whereas the €80 million arrival has netted only once every 189 minutes of action in England's top flight.

It would, therefore, be surprising if Liverpool cashed in on Carvalho now.
