Greenwood latest, Man Utd's McFred headache, Newcastle eye Spurs star - FootballTransfers' update
FootballTransfers brings you the latest transfer news regarding Mason Greenwood, Manchester United’s midfield and Newcastle’s chase for a winger
Mason Greenwood latest
Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag would like Mason Greenwood to stay at Old Trafford next season, according to sources close to the club. Greenwood, who last played for Manchester United 16 months ago, will have his future clarified after the FA Cup final this coming weekend.
The England striker has scored 36 goals and contributed 12 assists for the first team in 130 appearances. He was then suspended by the Red Devils pending a police investigation into his private life, which has subsequently been dropped. The club are presently conducting their own internal review into his behaviour, meanwhile.
Ten Hag appreciates the footballing qualities of the 21-year-old and believes he should be kept at Old Trafford on this basis. The former Ajax boss faces opposition from several board members, who believe Greenwood should not play for Man Utd again.
It is a possibility, though, that the new owners will have a decisive say in the player’s future, with takeover negotiations still ongoing.
Man Utd to sell Fred or McTominay
Manchester United will look to sell either Scott McTominay or Fred this coming summer but not both.
Fred, now 30, has been recently linked with a move to Fulham, and from what FootballTransfers has been told by sources, he is the likelier of the pair to be moved on. Fred has only started 12 times in the Premier League this season, with 23 of his 35 appearances for United as a substitute.
McTominay, who was wanted by Newcastle in January and, according to our sources, are still interested in signing the player, is still someone Ten Hag sees as a big part of his plans for next season. The Scotland international is, in the manager’s opinion, an important part of the United squad going forward into their Champions League campaign.
A final decision on the situation could come down to who they get the most money for.
Howe adds Kulusevski to Newcastle shortlist
Newcastle have made a winger one of their summer transfer priorities, with Moussa Diaby of Bayer Leverkusen and Barcelona’s Ferran Torres confirmed targets for manager Eddie Howe.
FootballTransfers has learned that the St James Park side, who are heading into the Champions League, are also monitoring the situation of Juventus star Dejan Kulusevski, who has spent the last 18 months on loan at Tottenham.
The Sweden international was wanted by the Tyneside club last summer and they are now waiting to see if Spurs will activate the player’s €35 million release clause.
Kulusevski has played 37 games this season for Tottenham, scoring only twice but chipping in with eight assists. His long-term future at both Spurs and Juventus is in doubt.
