The opening salvo has been fired in what might be the start of a bitter feud between two social media titans - welcome to Fabrizio Romano vs Elon Musk.

Football transfer expert Romano is known for his wide use of Twitter and other platforms to communicate his scoops, with the summer transfer window in particular a regular stage for flurries of posts revealing the biggest moves and deals from around the game.

Such is the Italian's notoriety that he even boasts a now world-famous catchphrase - "Here we go" - deployed when he considers a transfer report has moved beyond the point of no return and will imminently be announced by the parties involved.

Romano, however, and his 16.3 million Twitter followers may face more than they bargained for after tangling with the owner of the company and fellow prolific tweeter Elon Musk, who is followed by 145.9m users and has implemented sweeping, often controversial changes on the site since taking over the site in 2022.

It was Musk's latest such decision which invoked the wrath of Romano on Saturday.

The business magnate announced that temporary daily limits on reading tweets would be imposed in order to tackle "extreme levels of data scraping & system manipulation", with the number ranging from 300 to 6,000 depending on the individual user's status.

That did not meet with the approval of Romano, who responded: "Being on Twitter is becoming kind of challenging game nowadays…"

At the time of writing Musk had not replied to the barb, though the South African national is known for his hands-on approach to the site and for engaging in Twitter spats with critics.

Only time will tell just how temporary Twitter's restrictions will prove, but as one of the site's most-read and most avid users Romano will certainly be pleased to see things get back to normal at the busiest time of the year on the football transfer calendar.
