Liverpool are fully focused on signing Romeo Lavia over Matheus Nunes, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Reds have been linked with Wolves midfielder Nunes for some time, but the Portugal star seems unlikely to head to Anfield this summer.

It appears that Southampton’s Lavia will be the man Jurgen Klopp and co. turn to as they look to keep revamping their midfield – with Jordan Henderson poised to join Saudi outfit Al-Ettifaq and Fabinho’s future still up in the air.

In his column for CaughtOffside, Romano explained that Liverpool would struggle to sign Nunes in any case after Wolves lost key midfield duo Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho. He said:

“Matheus Nunes – a player linked with big moves in recent times, but Wolves already lost Joao Moutinho and Ruben Neves in the midfield this summer, so there’s no news at all about Nunes right now. Wolves will do their best to keep him.

“For sure he was on Liverpool’s list in January, but now their focus is on Romeo Lavia.”

Liverpool’s next big addition?

Lavia, 19, shone in a poor Southampton side who finished rock bottom of the Premier League last season – and Liverpool look to have fought off competition from Manchester City, who sold him to the Saints this time last year.

Sky Sports reported on Wednesday night that the Reds are set to table an improved offer for Lavia after Southampton rejected a bid of £40m.

The South Coast club are said to value the Belgium international – who is also attracting interest from Chelsea – at £50m.

Liverpool have already made two big midfield signings this summer, bringing in Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai from Brighton and RB Leipzig respectively.
